Putin demands more efficiency on borders

In Tuesday’s meeting in the Russian Border Commission, Prime Minister Putin highlighted the need for the introduction of new modern technology in the country’s border and customs stations.

-We are talking about the development of border infrastructure and improvement of state control at the border passes, Putin said, adding that the modernization of border infrastructure must be made “in correlation with the our foreign economic objectives”.

Putin, who on Monday visited the border point of Torfyanovka on the Russian-Finnish border, in the meeting expressed discontent with what he called a lack of improvement in cross-border issues, a government press release reads.

-In general, there are no real improvements in the situation in the border points, Mr. Putin said. –The normal situation is long queues, Putin highlighted, pointing at the situation on the Russian-Finnish border.

-I am convinced that we will not have the formation of a modern and reliable border infrastructure without cardinal improvements in the situation, he maintained.

The prime minister highlighted the importance of introducing new technological mechanisms in cross-border procedures, and that the different authorities operating at the borders should cooperate about a “one-window” principle for travellers.

-We have to focus on the improvement of efficient control procedures for the shipping of goods, people, transport streams across the border, Mr. Putin said, adding that Russia also should engage in the development of joint information systems for border and customs services.
