Russia cuts privat, public sector jobs

Russian companies plan to cut up to 200,000 jobs over the next two months because of the economic slowdown. Meanwhile, also the Russian public sector now cuts staffs to save costs. In Murmansk, the governor this week announced that 370 people will have to leave his administration.

Alexei Vovchenko, deputy head of the Federal Labor and Employment Service, on Wednesday told Interfax that up to 200,000 jobs in the private sector will vanish over the next two months.

Russian employment authorities last week said that unemployment in the country in October rose to a seven-month high of 4,6 million people, or 6,1 percent of the workforce, the Moscow Times reports.

Also the Russian public sector is hit by the crisis. In the region of Murmansk, Governor Yuri Yevdokimov this week confirmed that 370 people working in the regional executive branch of power will be fired. The governor also signaled that the regional legislative powers, as well as municipal authorities, will have to reduce personnel, a press release from the administration reads.
