Russia might jeopardize Finnish green energy goal

Finnish economic affairs minister Mauri Pekkarinen says Russia’s increase on timber export tariffs might hamper Finnish goals on renewable energy.

The minister was quoted by Finnish daily Ilkka that Russia’s planned increase on timber export tariffs would be a blow for Finland’s efforts to raise the share of renewable energy, Yle News reports. Mr Pekkarinen added that the European commission should ease Finland’s renewables targets if talks to persuade Russia to cancel the duty increase failed. Russia intends to boost timber export tariffs from 4 EUR to 50 EUR per cubic meters in a bid to strengthen domestic timber processing. The move might leave Finnish pulp industry, heavily dependent on the Russian raw material, in crisis.
