Sovcomflot predicts more income from gas transportation

Russia’s largest shipping company Sovcomflot sees a great increase in demand for LNG-tankers and plans an increase in its share of revenues from gas transport from 12 to 30 percent in the period to 2017.

The profitability of gas tanker traffic improved in 2011, with tripled rates for gas carriers, says Dmitry Rusanov, head of Sovcomflot’s gas division, according to Oilru.

In the first nine months of 2011 the company had orders for 45 LNG carriers. In comparison, only five LNG-tankers were ordered in the same period in 2010.

Growth was in particular a result of increase of Japanese imports of liquefied natural gas after the March earthquake, tsunami and the closure of a number of Japanese nuclear power plants.

Sovcomflot plans to increase its share of revenues from gas transport from 12 to 30 percent in the period to 2017. This is first of all connected to the plans for development of the large Shtokman gas field in the Barents Sea and the South Tambey project by the Yamal Peninsula.
