StatoilHydro lobbies opening of Lofoten

Norwegian energy major StatoilHydro steps up its efforts for the opening of the perspective but environmentally vulnerable Lofoten areas. –I must work with the politicians to get an opening of these areas, the company’s CEO Helge Lund says.

In an interview with Norwegian magazine Teknisk Ukeblad, the StatoilHydro leader says that “it is my democratic right to work for the interests of StatoilHydro irrespectively of what is politically correct”. -I will respect the decision made by the politician, but it is important that our positions are being heard, he adds. The Lofoten area outside northern Norway is considered among the most perspective remaining areas on the Norwegian shelf. Since 2001, the area has however been protected against all petroleum activities. In 2009, the Norwegian government will decide whether to open up for exploration in the area, well known for its picturesque landscapes and rich fish stocks. Norwegian oil production has declined dramatically over the last few years, and the oil industry is desperate to find more resources. -I believe our knowledge and our experiences show that we can develop the area in an environmentally responsible way, Mr. Lund says, adding that he perceives the population in the region as positive towards the plans
