Thriving fishery in Northern waters

Russian fishers have caught nearly 227.000 tons of cod in Northern waters in 2009. This is 20 percent more than in the same period of 2008. The Barents Sea and the White Sea are by far the most important fishing grounds for Russia.

The total Russian catch of cod in all waters rose with nearly 26 percent and amounted to 280.000 tons, a federal organ for monitoring of fisheries reports.

As BarentsObserver reported, Russia and Norway in October renewed the agreement on joint management on the common fish stocks in the Barents Sea. The two countries agreed to increase the quotas on cod for 2010 to 607.000 tons, which is 82.000 tons more than in 2009.

Fishery is one of few sectors in Russian economy that in spite of the financial crisis has shown a steady growth. Russian import of fish and sea food shrunk with 41 percent in the period January-October 2009 compared to the same period in 2008, as BarentsObserver wrote.
