Yevdokimov: Not all is bad!

The situation in Murmansk Oblast is not all bad. That was the conclusion after a meeting between Murmansk Oblast governor Yury Yevdokimov, town and municipality mayors and directors of leading enterprises in the region.

In his opening speech, governor Yevdokimov stated that the financial crisis has had big consequences for the region. Major enterprises have reduced their production volume with one third, and as a result, budget incomes have fallen with hundreds of millions rubles and unemployment is rising. Construction of new objects has also been halted.

But at the same time, projects and plans are still being made, investment programs are not scaled down, and one cannot say that all is bad.

- We are going to live decently and well. All events connected with the crisis will pass, and we have to be ready to work with fresh force and on a new basis in the coming years, Yevdokimov said.

Characteristic for this meeting was the lack of talk about development of oil and gas deposits. The governor limited himself to one sentence:

- Nothing has been cancelled. Shtokman goes according to the plan.

The participants in the meeting discussed other areas of activity that might be of priority for Murmansk Oblast – fisheries and Murmansk transport hub. Regarding the latter, optimism is high. Especially the planned container terminal is expected to give large incomes to the region.
