Few Russians in Kirkenes
You meet Russians practically everywhere in the Norwegian border town of Kirkenes. However, only 3,1 percent of the permanent population are Russians, new statistical figures show.
Figures from Statistics Norway show that only 295 of the 9518 people in the Sør-Varanger municipality have Russian background, newspaper Sør-Varanger Avis reports. Most of them live in the municipal centre of Kirkenes.
The by far biggest part of the 12823 Russians living in Norway reside in the southern parts of the country. Oslo has most Russians with 1793 individuals, followed by Bergen (493) and Trondheim (465).
In the northern parts of the country, a total of 438 Russians live in Tromsø, 295 in Sør-Varanger and 202 in Alta.
A total 66 percent of the Russian in Norway are women. In Kirkenes, Alta and Tromsø, the number is even bigger – above 70 percent.
