Murmansk entered top 30 of business-oriented cities in Russia

Murmansk has for the first time entered Forbes Russia’s rating of the top 30 Russian cities best suitable for running business.

The annual rating of the thirty best cities in Russian for business is done by Forbes since 2008, web site BarentsNova.com writes. This is the first year Murmansk has managed to enter the rating, and so far no other cities in the Russian part of the Barents Region are on the list.

Forbes Russia identified several reasons for placing Murmansk among the 30 top business-oriented cities, including last year’s change of government. In 2009 the public elected Governor Yuri Yevdokimov was replaced by a person from Moscow, the Former Deputy Head of the Federal Fisheries Agency Dmitry Dmitriyenko.

Another reason is Murmansk’s links to the development of the Arctic shelf, the startup of oil production and launch of the Nord Stream pipeline. Last autumn, Murmansk held the city’s first International Economic Forum, where the Russian Minister of Transport Igor Levitin described Murmansk as a gateway to the Arctic and predicted a great future for the city.
