Worlds best skiers to the Barents Region
Tour de Barents is a new international cross-country skiing event organised in the Barents Region at the beginning of April 2009. This thrilling competition will be held in four localities of the Barents region in three different nations: Murmansk in Russia, Vadsø in Norway and Saariselkä and Rovaniemi in Finnish Lapland.
The idea to arrange the Tour-de-Barents ski competition in the Barents Region was initiated by former Norwegian Olympic gold-winner Vegard Ulvang from Kirkenes in cooperation with the Norwegian Barents Secretariat. The idea was first time presented to the Murmansk sport committe in autumn 2006.
Also junior skiers
The world’s best skiers will be invited, competing for substantial cash prizes. As a side programme to the Tour de Barents, a similar Tour will be organised for the promising junior skiers of the Barents region. The Norwegian Barents Secretariat has already provided grants to youth ski-competions between Finnmark and both Murmansk and Arkhangelsk in the Russian part of the Barents Region.
