Submarine town Polyarny says 155 local men killed in Ukraine
A memorial stone plaque in the naval town on the Kola Peninsula includes 155 names. At least 70 of them were added in 2026.
A memorial site in Polyarny on the Kola Peninsula, which was built in 2024, is being expanded as more local men are killed in the war of aggression against Ukraine.
The memorial includes statues of three warriors and granite plates with the names of the fallen men. The memorial is part of a so-called "Alley of Heroes."
According to Na Strazhe Zapolyarya, a naval newspaper, a total of 155 names are now engraved on the stone plates. Of these, 70 were killed in 2026, the newspaper reports. In 2024, 45 names were added, and in 2025, 30 names were added.
Among the local submariners killed in Ukraine is Yuri Svedovoy, who was trained at the 269th Underwater Spetsnaz Unit in Gadzhievo before he went to Ukraine to fight.
In just the first two weeks of September 2026, another 11 men from the municipality were reported killed. Of these, two were from Gadzhievo, five from Polyarny, and four from Snezhnogorsk, according to information from the Telegram channel Ne Zhdi Menya iz Ukrainy.
Polyarny is part of the military municipality of Aleksandrovsk, which has a population of about 30,000. Until 1947, Polyarny served as the headquarters base for the Northern Fleet and housed the Soviet submarines that operated in Arctic waters. Today, the town is a base for a fleet of diesel-powered submarines, as well as a fleet of minesweepers. The municipality of Aleksandrovsk also includes the naval towns of Snezhnogorsk, Gadzhievo, and Olenya Bay.
The monument in Polyarny is named "Three Warriors" and was built with support from a regional development programme managed by Murmansk Governor Andrei Chibis. According to local authorities, it symbolises three generations of warriors, from the Second World War to the onslaught on Ukraine.
The actual number of killed men from Aleksandrovsk and other parts of the Murmansk region is not possible to determine and verify. But at least 1,100 men from region are confirmed killed, according to a survey compiled by the Barents Observer.
