New paper is good news for Zapolyarny

The first weekly edition of the newspaper “Zapolyarny Vestnik” has been distributed in the Russian border town of Zapolyarny (Murmansk Oblast). The weekly is headed by Natalia Nikitina, a former journalist in the Cosmopolitan.

-We intend to create the redaction from scratch, Ms. Nikitina says to B-port.com. –We will recruit journalists from Zapolyarny, she adds. The first edition of the newspaper was issued on 26 July.

Chief editor Nikitina has background from the Zapolyarny city administration, as well as from the Sankt Petersburg office of the Cosmopolitan. According to the Pechenga news blog, she was also the initiator of a newspaper in the neighbouring town of Nikel in 2006, an issue which existed only few months.

It remains a question who finances the newspaper initiative. According to news blog Pechenga, the local administration might be among the financers. Also regional industrial major Norilsk Nickel might be a contributor. Afterall, the name of the newspaper is the same as the main newspaper in Norilsk, the main industrial centre of mining and metallurgy giant Norilsk Nickel.

From before, the newspaper “Pechenga” is made and distributed in the region.
