Modest decline in nickel production

First quarter production figures from Norilsk Nickel’s regional subsidiary Kolskaya GMK show a three percent decline year on year and a 13 percent decline from fourth quarter 2008.

In the first three months of 2009, the company produced a total of 55,000 tons of nickel which is three percent less than in the same period in 2008, a company press release reads. The result is far better than in the predominant part of other Russian industry.

First quarter figures for 2009 are down 13 percent from fourth quarter 2008 results, newspaper Vedomosti reports.

Kolskaya GMK is a key subsidiary of metal and metallurgy major Norilsk Nickel. The company also produces cupper, palladium and platinum. Year on year production figures for those metals were respectively minus eight percent, minus six percent and minus two percent.
