More energy from Russia
Russia will by year 2030 have boosted its gas production by up to 42 percent and its oil production by almost 10 percent. The production of alternative energy is to increase too, and will by 2020 amount to 4,5 percent of the country’s energy generation, the new Russian energy strategy reads.
The strategy document, which in its final version was adopted by government on 13 November, states that the country’s gas production by year 2030 is to increase from 664 billion cubic meters (2008) to 885-940 cubic meters in 2030.
Gas exports, meanwhile, will increase from 241 billion cubic meters in 2008 to 349-368 billion cubic meters in 2030. Most of that increase will be exported to Asian countries, the document reads.
Thanks to the Shtokman field in the Barents Sea, Northwest Russia will be among the regions with the strongest growth in gas production. Up to 147 billion cubic meters of gas are to be produced in the region in 2030, up from 46 billion cubic meters in 2005, Newsru.com reports
As BarentsObserver reported in a previous article about the strategy, three phases are outlined: In the period 2013-2013, the consequences of the current crisis are to be overcome; in the period 2015-2022, the fuel-based sector is to be made top efficient and in the period 2022-2030, the economy will be turning more towards the use of alternative sources of energy.
The production of alternative energy has got its own chapter in the strategy, but still remains a relatively low priority. According to plans, the generation of alternative energy will increase to 4,5 percent of the country’s total energy production in 2020. That is to be achieved with investments in small-scale hydro generation, wind, sun, tide power, bio-mass and geo-thermal projects.
By 2030, the amount of alternative energy produced will increase further to an annual total of 80-100 billion kWh, the document reads.
