EU hypocracy

European politicians are breathtakingly hypocritical about sealskins, the Economist writes in an editorial

The EU Parliament this month banned all imports of sealskin to the EU, arguing that the seal hunting is contradictory with animal welfare. At the same time European industrial farms dispatch 1 million sheep, cattle and pigs every day.

“By the grim standards of Europe’s farrowing sheds, millions of seals enjoy a blissful life fishing and breeding on the Canadian ice. At least Canadian seals have the luxury of being stunned before they die”, the Economist writes.

The journal argues that the EU parliamentarians adopted the seal ban in a bid to win popular support ahead of the upcoming EU Parliament elections.

Seal hunting seem to have a softening effect on politicians. As BarentsObserver reported, even hardliner Vladimir Putin this year introduced stricter regulations on Russian seal hunting.
