Admiral: military conflicts in Arctic unlikely

Former head commander of the Russian Northern Fleet, Mr. Vyacheslav Popov, believes military conflicts over Arctic hydrocarbon resources are highly unlikely.

-Although I am a military man, I believe that any military conflict now are unlikely, and among the Arctic countries there will of course not be any conflicts, he said at a conference in Murmansk today. At the same time, however, the admiral underlined that the military potential is vital in securing national interests in the Arctic. -The presence of military power is perhaps even the most important argument for the protection of ones interests, the former fleet commander said. Vyacheslav Popov currently heads the Federation Council’s Commission on national marine policies. He participates in this week’s two-day seminar “Russia’s marine strategy and economic activities in the Arctic”
