Arctic countries to sign joint agreement

A pan-Arctic agreement on search and rescue cooperation at sea and in air is to be signed in 2011, a high-ranking Russian official confirms.

The agreement is planned signed in the spring session 2011 of the Arctic Council, Russian Ambassador at large Anton Vasiliev told RIA Novosti.

-This will be the first ever legally binding multilateral agreement on the Arctic, Vasiliev said, adding that negotiations are proceeding successfully. It is Russia and the USA which have been the driving force behind the deal.

Vasiliev also maintains that the conference “The Arctic – Territory of Dialogue”, to be held in Moscow later this week, is of major importance for the development of Arctic cooperation.
