Canadian visit to Murmansk

A delegation from the Canadian province Manitoba has visited Murmansk. Both regions are predicted to get important roles as new transport routes open in the Arctic.

The northern areas of Canada and Russia have many things in common, especially when it comes to the number of inhabitants and nature conditions, GTRK Murman writes. Nickel is being produced both in Manitoba and on the Kola Peninsula, and the town of Churchill has Canada’s only deepwater port.

In both countries, development of the northern areas was for a long time not regarded as an important state responsibility, but now the situation is completely changed. Development of ports and transport hubs is up for discussion both in Canada and Russia.

The Canadian government plans to spend 200 million dollars on roads in the harbor area, Regional Minister for Infrastructure and Transport in Manitoba Steve Ashton said.
