"Goliat" oil will be developed
ENI Norway, operator of the “Goliat” oil field outside the coast of northern Norway, has together with its partners decided to develop the prospective field. However, there will be no onshore plant.
ENI Norway has decided to develop the Goliat discovery with an offshore floating processing and storage unit with subsea wells. Calculations show that the well contains approximately 200 million barrels of oil. The economy in the project is emphasized as one of the main reasons for choosing this production solution, a press release from the company reads.
In the Norwegian county of Finnmark, politicians have long demanded that the Goliat oil should be transported to land and processed there. ENI Norway says in a press release that an offshore processing and storage unit also will be the most effective solution to tie in any future discoveries close to the Goliat field.
In the press release the oil company says that they understand that people in Finnmark County are interested in spin off effects from the project. The oil company has already announced that all onshore-based support for the Goliat operations will be proposed to be located in Hammerfest. All supply service will also be managed from Hammerfest.
ENI Norway is planning to have the development plan ready by the end of 2008 and secure approval from the Norwegian Parliament in spring 2009.
