Hamsun Center opened in Northern Norway

As part of the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the birth of the Norwegian author Knut Hamsun the new Hamsun Centre was opened in his childhood home place Hamarøy yesterday.

More than 2000 visitors attended the ceremony when Crown Princess Mette-Marit opened the Hamsun Center in Hamarøy, Nordland County

, newspaper Harstad Tidene writes. This is Norway’s first museum dedicated to the world famous author, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1920 but whose literary talent was overshadowed by his later Nazi sympathies.

The building is designed by the American architect Steven Holl and has received much attention, both positive and negative, because of its modern angular appearance.

Knut Hamsun’s work includes Hunger, Mysteries and Growth of the Soil.
