Less poor people in Murmansk

Murmansk Oblast is one of the regions with the lowest share of poor people in Northwest Russia. In 2008 14,9 percent of the population lived under the poverty line, which is slightly less than in 2007.

Incomes rose considerably in Murmansk Oblast in 2008. Nominal wages rose with 26 percent and amounted to over 23.400 RUB or 523 EUR.

As BarentsObserver earlier reported, the number of rubel millionaires in Murmansk Oblast has more than doubled over the last year. In the 2008 tax declaration, 2767 people declared they had incomes of one million rubles (app. 2.25 million EUR), which is 70 percent more than in 2007.

The Republic of Kareliya has the largest share of poor people in North-Western Russia - over 20 percent of the population lives under the poverty line there, B-port reports.
