Majority opposed to Norwegian EU membership
A fresh poll shows a massive opposition to Norwegian EU membership. 62 percent of those asked say “no” to membership, while only 24 percent are in favour.
13.2 per cent are undecided, the poll shows, NRK reports.
While the group in favour has dropped by 10 per cent over the past year, the group in opposition has increased by 10 per cent.
- I believe people are opposed to all the new adjustments and directives coming from the EU, says Torunn Husvik, deputy leader of “No to EU” (Nei til EU). She also believes that the global financial crisis has influenced many.
There have been two popular referendums on Norwegian EU membership in Norway – one in 1972 and one in 1994. In the first referendum, 53.5 percent voted against membership, while the result in 1994 showed that 52.2 percent of the population opposed membership. The voter turnout in 1994 was 89 percent.
