Murmansk editor dismissed

The editor-in-chief of the Murman TV and Radio Chanel, Dmitry Peredery, has been dismissed following the broadcasting of a controversial interview with now dismissed Murmansk Governor Yury Yevdokimov.

According to Nezavisimaya Gazeta, Mr. Peredery was fired because of the broadcasting of an interview with now retired governor Yury Yevdokimov. In the interview, Yevdokimov expressed regrets about his dismissal.

However, NG.ru writes, the unofficial reason for the dismissal is rather the broadcaster’s support of Yevdokimov and Sergey Subbotin, the independent candidate who defeated United Russia’s candidate Mikhail Savchenko in the recent city mayor elections.

The Murmansk city mayor’s elections and the conflict surrounding the vote was the direct reason why President Medvedev on 21 March fired Yevdokimov.

Leader of the Barents Press organization, Yelena Larionova, says to NRK that is common in Russia to change the leaders of the main media institutions following the shift of political leaders. –Remember, that most media institutions in Russia, including in Murmansk Oblast, get support from the state, and that the authorities therefore believe they can rule over the media, she says.
