Record year for Norwegian seafood exports
Norwegian seafood exports in 2009 totaled 44.7 billion NOK and for the sixth year in a row set a new seafood export record. Russia is Norway’s second most important market after France.
Compared with 2008, exports are up by no less than 6 billion NOK, according to figures from the Norwegian Seafood Export Council. The volume of seafood exports totaled 2.6 million tons, an increase of 268,000 tons compared with 2008. This is equal to 35 million meals of Norwegian seafood - every day.
Russia is the second largest market for Norwegian seafood with an export value of 4.6 billion NOK in 2009, up by 662 million NOK from 2008. On first place is France, with an export value of 4.7 billion NOK, up by 668 million NOK from 2008.
In 2009, Norwegian exports of farmed seafood increased by 5.9 billion NOK to 26 billion NOK, equal to 58 percent of total seafood exports. Of this, salmon accounts for 23.7 billion NOK and trout 1.9 billion NOK. These figures represent new export records for both salmon and trout from Norway. Russia is Norway’s largest market for trout, with 57 percent of the export value.
Russia is also Norway’s most important market for herring and capelin with a total export value of a little more than 1 billion NOK in 2009. For both of these types, Ukraine is Norway’s second largest market.
