Trucks feed Finnish Lapland
Tens of big trucks daily bring the necessary foodstuffs to the northernmost parts of Finland. As practically all food processing industry has left the region, the local population has become increasingly dependent on the long-distance food transports.
Over the last years, about all food processing industries have left the Lapland region and the population now gets about all food supplies from southern Finland. With Christmas coming more than a million kilos of foodstuffs are transported into Lapland from other parts of Finland every day, Yle News reports. Lapland is the home of about 3,6 percent of Finland’s population, and is by far the least densely populated area in the country. Of the more than 185 000 inhabitants, less than five percent are Sami people. The biggest towns in the region are Rovaniemi, Kemi, and Tornio.
