Bomb bay doors open over U.S. frigate
A Russian maritime patrol aircraft passed over a U.S. Navy frigate in the Barents Sea with its bomb bay doors open.
The U.S. Navy frigate “USS Taylor” was sailing in international waters, returning from an official visit to Murmansk on Russia’s Kola Peninsula last week. The incident in the Barents Sea happened over the weekend.
“USS Taylor” had first made a port call in Tromsø, Northern Norway two weeks ago, and sailed around North Cape towards Murmansk, where the frigate made a port call early last week. BarentsObserver met with several of the naval crew having a good time in Murmansk last Monday and Tuesday.
Returning from Murmansk, Russia’s largest city north of the Arctic Circle, the U.S. Navy frigate was sailing in international waters when the Russian maritime patrol aircraft made two low passes over the vessel, reports CBSNews on Thursday.
According to the new channel the Russian aircraft is capable of carrying torpedoes, bombs and depth charges. The bomb bay doors of the aircraft were open when is passed over “USS Taylor” in the Barents Sea.
Chief of U.S. Naval Operations Admiral Gary Roughead met his Russian counterpart on Wednesday this week, asked about the incident, and got a satisfying explanation, according to a U.S. Navy spokesman, reports CBSNews.
“USS Taylor” was built in 1983 and has a crew of 15 officers and 190 enlisted.
