Russia drops on peace index
The latest ranking from the Global Peace Index places Russia as number 143 of 149 countries.
According to the ranking presented this week, Russia is one of the least peaceful countries in the world. The ranking, which is presented by the Australia-based organization Vision of Humanity, places Russia as number 143 of 149 countries.
Russia continues to struggle with troublesome relations in the Caucasus and has high domestic violence rates, the report reads. The ranking is based on a total of 23 indicators ranging from “perceptions of criminality in society”, “potential for terrorist acts” and “number of armed services personnel” to “political instability” and “level of violent crime”.
According to the report, “Russia’s economic downturn since late 2008 led to some social protests across Russia, the most serious of which took place in Vladivostok in early 2009. Rates of homicide and violent crime remain high and Russians continue to perceive high levels of criminality. Russia’s military capability has shrunk greatly since the Soviet era, but it remains powerful and sophisticated, with more heavy weapons per head of population than most of the 149 countries surveyed.”
